Russians have a long history and tradition
of growing their own produce.
For many Russians their country dacha,
or bach, is where they escape from their urban highrises,
get close to nature and grow their own summer vegetables
and fruit, and collect wild mushrooms. May Day is the
traditional Russian spring holiday when dacha owners
spend the long weekend sowing seeds and tending to their
fruit trees after the winter frosts have retreated.
Much of their produce is taken back to
their city homes and stored for use over the winter.
Bottling, pickling and marinating are common methods
for preserving Russian produce including cucumbers,
tomatoes, cabbage and salty sweet pickled watermelon
which is made in large barrels.
