Russia and other former Soviet territories have a great number of meat dishes that vary greatly due to cultural influences.

You've no doubt heard of Beef Stroganoff. This dish was the creation of Count Stroganoff's French chef in the 19th Century, hence the name. In the west it is served on rice however classically a small pile of fried straw potatoes would accompany the dish.

As legend has it, the famous dish 'Steak Tartare' came from the famous horsemen warriors of Tarary. Constantly on the move and with no time to stop and cook their food, they tenderised raw meat under their saddles so it could be more easily eaten raw.

More appealing are the large number of Russian dough based meat creations such as Pelmeni and Pirozhki - the former a meat dumpling from Siberia similar to Ravioli but served with sour cream or butter, the later are pies filled with boiled meats, potatoes or boiled eggs.

Then there are wonderful dishes such as 'Plov', the rice and lamb dish from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, 'Chakhobili' (the Georgian chicken casserole popular with Josef Stalin) and 'Manty' from Uzbekistan, which are similar to chinese dumplings.

There are plenty more meat dishes, certainly more than can be mentioned here, all different in style and flavour, so try and enjoy.

Chakhobili - a flavoursome chicken casserole from Georgia and a favourite of Josef Stalin's.
